A recent survey from Home-Start UK showed that almost 1-in-5 parents rarely or never have meaningful contact with another adult outside their household. And it is the most vulnerable families who the most at risk of isolation. Young parents are much more likely to report feeling isolated than older parents and parents who are not working are over twice as likely to always or often feel lonely or isolated, than those who are working, with people who are unemployed three times more likely, and those on lower incomes are more likely to say they always or often feel lonely, compared to those on higher incomes. It is widely recognised that what happens in the first 1,001 days of life, from pregnancy, lays the foundations for physical and mental health. Babies’ brains are developing fast and are at their most adaptable in the womb and in the early years of life. That’s why we need to compassionate communities of support for families in the critical early years of childhood, to create opportunities for all children. Ahead of the UK budget, I am joining Home-Start UK in their call for increased funding for support for parents, including one-to-one support and extra meeting places for parents and for the government to commit to extending the funding for Family Hubs past March 2025 and the eventual expansion of early years provision, and for a reengagement with voluntary and community-based organisations, that play an essential role in creating relational, compassionate support for families and children, but who have come under incredible financial pressure in recent years. I am asking you to whatever you can to support these calls for investment in this crucial area which will make a huge difference to families in our area. Yours sincerely, [insert your name] [Include your address so they know you live in their constituency] Manage Cookie Preferences
